1986 Swedish Rally Question
I know that Tony Pond didnt do the event. But i was wondering if there was just the 1 computervision sponsored car of Wilson, and the works supported but Clarion sponsored Eklund or was there another computervision sponsored car on the event? And if there was who was it? Thanks :)

Hi Nicky, I'm sure one of our resident experts will be able to give you the definitive answer but I can only remember Malcolm Wilson's car and Eklund's Clarion car. By coincidence,I was watching the BBC Grandstand coverage from that event on YouTube just the other day,but they'd cut the bit out where Wilson's Metro snapped it's cambelt and was stuck at the side of the road. Take care, Gary.

I'm surprised they didnt put someone like Llewellin in D750 PDM as no.2 Computervision driver :( On about drivers, i was reading Mark Lowes 6R4 bible that i bought off him ( of only 3 made wasnt it Mark? ) the other day and couldnt belive reading that Austin Rover were very close to getting the services of non other than Hannu Mikkola for the 86 season.

I only ever done 3 Nicky ye You, Me and Dan Ross got them I think like other teams ARG would of been after others too Never really thought about the Pond issue in Sweden, maybe he didnt like the event or ARG where wanting to send one car saving the budget I cant honestly answer that one

For certain events there would only be the single Computervision sponsored 6R4, however Austin Rover Motorsport could also nominate one of the other drivers on that event as a works entrant, thereby securing much valued manufacturer points. If any of you have any 1986 programmes, I'm sure that if it states Austin Rover World Championship Team next to the driver, then they will have been nominated for manufacturer points for that particular rally. On the 1986 Swedish Rally there was actually three 6R4s entered - Malcolm, Per and Swiss privateer Jean-Luc Thevenod in his David Richards Autosport (DRA) left hand drive car. Per was really miffed as apparently Schmidt Motorsport said that he couldn't have a left hand drive car due to various reasons. He then turns up in Sweden and there is a car on the entry list.

Cheers for the info captain, much appreciated! Never knew there was 3 6R4's on the swedish, how did Jean-Luc Thevenod do? I dont supppose you know Captain but i have always wonderd what the bumper modification was for on the front bumper for the swedish. If you see any pics or videos the bumper has blue rubber flaps. Is it to stop the snow going up the car? Many thanks for your input :D

Captain Chaos- 12-31-2007

I assumed the same thing Nicky - to stop the snow going over the screen or headlights if it had the misfortune to hit a snowbank. Minis also had the same sort of flap if I remember right - even for the mud on some of the long distance marathons they con-*test*-('")ed. I'll find out how Jean-Luc got on and get back to you next year! Happy New Year mate! ;)

Captain Chaos- 01-05-2008

Jean-Luc Thevenod finished 16th Overall chaps. Not a bad result for a privateer, in his first rally, on snow & ice. The Reg No was C818PRP - for your files Mark.

Metro 6R4 Online News- 01-05-2008

Cheers David, got mixed up with C603PRP then lol

Captain Chaos- 01-05-2008

You mean C630 PRP don't you Mark?

Just -*test*-('")ing ya lol

Looking at the 1986 Lombard RAC Rally entry list, there were a total of 7 Austin Rover World Championship Team entrants... 4 - Pond / Arthur 10 - Wilson / Harris 14 - Llewellin / Short 15 - McRae / Grindrod 17 - Eklund / Whittock 19 - Duez / Lux 20 - Toivonen / Wilson ...so no wonder the team actually clinched the Team Award for the event! Also helped by the fact that Peugeot actually forgot to enter! :D

Captain Chaos- 01-14-2008

Here's the photo of Jean-Luc Thevenod I promised you...

WOW thanks for posting the pic captain, much appreciated :D

The very first left hand drive Metro 6R4! Apologies for the cropping, but there isn't anything else at the base I'm afraid.
