My 6r4 Project Hey everybody... Im new here so this is also a hello :)
Ill get straight to the point, im a serious Group B nut, even though im only 18
and wasnt even born before the tragic events of 1986 :(. I will be honest here, the Metro 6r4 isnt my favourite of the group B parade as i have an overwhelmingly huge soft spot for the RS200. Anyways like i said im only 18 and living in the UK means i cant really afford to fork out £100,000 for one, nor can i afford £18,000 for a replica or £30,000 for a Metro 6r4. But as a complete nutter i feel i have to own a Group B beast as my first car :P
I know this is going to seem completely crazy to you guys who have real 6r4s.....i envy you... but the 6r4 is really the only one i can build on my budget, the only other one i could even physically make without buying an expensive stock car as a base is the Opel Manta 400 but the kit is rather expensive and quite rare.
So yea anyway my plan is to buy a 1.3 Turbo MG Metro and a 6r4 replica bodykit, which seem to be readily available. Im going to leave the engine for a year or more and then replace it as i wont be able to afford the insurance on the engine i want at the moment.
So yea i thought you guys might be the right people to talk to, to help me with my project. I personally dont know much about mechanics but i know people that do that can help me...
I was thinking about what parts i would use and i was wondering what you guys thought...
Bodykit
I found a few up for sale and they were all pretty expensive. eBay proved to be my ally here...theres a full kit going for £280 at the moment so im hoping there will be more 2nd hand.
Engine
Like i said before this may take some for me to be able to do this but ive been looking at what engine lifts people recommend online and it seems most people tend to go with V8s (generally Jaguar or Rover) but i really dont want to go any higher than a V6 and anything over 2.5 litres probably isnt achievable at this time. I was thinking about a japanese engine. Does anyone know the logistics of putting a japanese engine in a metro? ....i was thinking either Honda, Mitsubishi or Nissan.
Transmission & Running Gear
Obviously i would probably be sticking with a Rover gearbox or getting one out of the car i lefted the engine from. Another concern is maybe a transfer box. I would prefer 4wd with an option of rear 2wd also but then theres the stress on the transfer box which i would need to pull outof a Range Rover or something to cope with it. If not rwd is a must so whichever way its going to need serious running gear modifactions when i change the engine...
Axles
Im not sure if this is a concern but it might be. The only thing i worry about here is that i might need to put slightly larger wheels on the back axle and space the front ones. I dont know and i probably wont until i have a Metro and the bodykit to try it out with. Hopefully someone here will tell me this isnt needed, that would make me very happy :)
Wheels
This doesnt really need much discussion. It would be nice to know how much room there is under the wheel arches on a 6r4. If someone could tell me the maximum wheel size (although im not going to have stupid low profile tyres or anything) that would be great. Im probably going to either use newer 5 spoke MG alloys or some with style similar to the official 6r4 ones.
Thats the main jist of it. There will be other modifications but none notable at this time. I havnt even bought the metro yet :P ....so yea if you guys have anything to say or any useful information i might need all help and interested is appreciated :)
If there is any interest i will keep you guys updated.

Hi first off welcoem to the forum we hope you enjoy posting here. No worries about the 6r4 not being your favourite of all the group b cars the main thing is your a group b nut like us all im sure that are on here :)
To be honest your plans sound ok but the amount of work required to get it done and to be safe aswell would take alot of time and alot of money. You would be best off buying a rolling 6r4 shell and starting from that but the prices for a rolling shell arent cheap for an 18 year old.
If i was you have a chat with some 6r4 experts like Ian Rowlance as he will be able to advise you alot better than myself. Ian Rowlances contact info can be found at www.6r4.com
I admire your enthusiasm though i was the same when i was 18 a couple of years ago but after going through the costs it came abit obvious that it wasnt going to be.
Ill be waiting for my 6 numbers to come up on saturday

Well if you can find a written off Rover 75 which used the 2.0 V6 version then thats not bad to start with as long as you are using it for road use.
Transmission wise if you can get a transfer box to mate up to rover then go for Lancer running gear or even Subaru and hang a diff from a cradle bolted to the rear floor.
Transmission tunnel can either be made by yourself or use Impreza/Legacy tunnel.
Loosely attach the bodykit to the car then draw where you are going to position suspension legs and location of engine so that the shafts line up
Again rear arches attach and draw out where you want the axle but you might have to ge your prop shortened or have one made up.
A lot of work but cheaper option buy a Corsa and a scrap 4x4 Calibra / Cavalier and cut the floor out and weld that in after measuring up
Good luck with it
