PLEASE SUPPORT THE ULTIMATE CHARITY CYCLE RIDE
I would like to take this opportunity to inform everyone about the charity ride I am undertaking in July with former England footballer Geoff Thomas who was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2004 and given only 3 years to live. Geoff Thomas is again undertaking the gruelling task of riding the full Tour de France route in July and will be riding 2 days behind the race with his team. This means the team start in London on Monday July 9 and finish in Paris on Tuesday July 31. Covering 3,550 kilometres, made up of 11 flat stages, 6 mountain stages, 1 medium mountain stage and 2 individual time-trial stages. There will be 3 mountain finishes, 2 rest days, 117 kilometres of individual time-trials and 21 Category 1, Category 2 and highest level passes. Other team members include his former Crystal Palace and England team mate now turned radio and TV pundit Ian Wright, Pete Slater from Science-In-Sport along with 5 cancer survivors. I will be covering the middle week from 16th - 20th July through the Alps. My stages will be: Stage 7 - Bourg-en-Bresse Le Grand-Bornand 197,5 km - MONDAY Stage 8 - Le Grand-Bornand Tignes 165 km - TUESDAY Rest day- WEDNESDAY Stage 9 - Val d'Isère Briançon 159,5 km - THURSDAY Stage 10- Tallard Marseille 229,5 km - FRIDAY Stage 11- Marseille Montpellier 182,5 km - SATURDAY I would be extremely grateful if you could show your support by donating at www.geoffthomasfoundation.com/donate.html Even the smallest of donations will help directly to influence the treatment of cancer and to make real progress with innovative drugs and treatments. Pete’s decision to ride is down to the fact that his mum has breast cancer that has spread to the lymph, diagnosed just over 2 years ago, also his father in law had pancreatic cancer, one of the worst cancers for survival rates, diagnosed 6 weeks before his wedding in 2004. Personally I have also had close family friends and also one recently retired Impsport staff member, who have lost their battle with cancer. I should make you aware that climbing is not my strongpoint and it has been 5 years since I last raced competitively, which makes my choice to ride the week in the Alps definitely not an ‘easy way out’ however, if Pete and I can use our fitness to help others by being a part of this team then it will be very satisfying to know that it will help others in the long term. The Geoff Thomas Foundation is committed to the development and delivery of new treatments for patients with cancer and leukaemia across the country. The Foundation will have the advantage of being able to harness the power and popularity of football and Geoff’s close association with the sport, which has already given his work huge profile to date. The tour ride is being filmed by director Ridley Scott for TV documentary, this should ensure that you get an even better return for your donation as no doubt you will see both of us in pain throughout the programme… Thanks for your support and please remember to check the website in July to see how we are doing!! - www.geoffthomasfoundation.com

I'll certainly support your fundraising efforts and I thank you for choosing to take part in something as gruelling as this, for such a good cause!! I know lots about Geoff's previous charity work through my interest in footie and the coverage TalkSport have given his efforts up to now and I'll be proud to support the ride. Well done for taking part and good luck with the event! Gary.
